Why crowdfund research?

It has become more and more difficult to obtain funding for disease research today.

As an attempt to address this problem, we have created dotcure.org in order to allow donors to directly fund academic and commercial biotech research.

Who are we?

This site was created by Duncan Ross, PhD, I am a cancer researcher, and I performed my graduate work on graft vs host disease after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation under Dr. Robert Levy at the University of Miami. My pubmed publications can be referenced under the handle [DB Ross]. After spending years developing internet startups after college, I began my graduate career due to the diagnosis of my father with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. In his memory, and along with cancerfocus.org, I hope this site will aid in moving our country's very talented researchers towards the clinical implementation of their ideas while faced by cuts in federal funding.

Why is this needed (donors)?

Health research is expensive. In order to believe our results, the reagents we use, be it serum, buffers, or animals, must be standardized across the industry. Because of this, few companies produce reagents and the cost is very high. For example, one experiment may use 80 mice, with each mouse costing close to $100 dollars. This experiment must be repeated 3 or 4 times. That's $32,000 to believe one result, and this is independent of the analysis and human cost.

How does one participate (donors)?

Choose projects you like, and have fun knowing you're moving our society forward! Some researchers will set funding amounts for which they will contact you (for example, if you have questions about a disease)

How does one participate (researchers)?

Add your project, if it is approved, it will appear on this site. When the funding period you choose is finished, you will receive the funds via paypal minus a 7% fee.
